Farmers are out into the field for harvest, but with the recent hot, dry weather comes the risk of fires, and it doesn't take much for fires out in the field to spread quickly!
Here are some tips to prevent field fires during harvest season:
*Make sure your machinery is in good working order. Be sure to clean around the engine compartments, or any exhaust using a high-pressure washer or compressed air to remove caked oil grease and debris.
*If your equipment has an attached water tank and pump on either a trailer or truck, ensure they are working condition and kept convenient.
*Keep all bearings and gears well oiled to prevent heat build-up and keep lubricants at the proper levels by checking the coolant and oil levels daily. Be sure to inspect all hoses to make sure there are no leaks.
*Have at least two ABC fire extinguishers, a small 10 lbs. unit in the cab, and a larger 20 lbs. unit at ground level.
*If you can, have a tractor hooked up to a disc near the field you are harvesting and have a shovel on hand to throw dirt on to the fire.
*If a fire does break out, call 9-1-1 and attack it with fire extinguishers if it is safe to do so.
Keep in mind that personal safety is, of course, more important than property loss. Be safe and have a wonderful Harvest season!
